Thursday, April 4 at 7:30 PM Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art Saturday, April 6 at 7:30 PM Volland Store in the Flint Hills on Saturday The Loveliness of Air is an electroacoustic original composition based upon selected poetry and prose of children under the age of 15 who were victims of the Theresienstadt (Terezín) Nazi concentration camp between the years 1942 and 1944. Of 15,000 victims who passed through this prison camp, 100 returned. The composition and production of The Loveliness of Air was supported in part by a grant from Arizona State University, and was composed and engineered by Dr. Joseph Wytko. It includes narrations in nearly one dozen languages and features guest saxophone solo artist Dr. Anna Marie Wytko, Associate Professor of Music in the Kansas State University School of Music, Theatre and Dance. Additionally, the performance includes various theatrical elements. The poems, prose, and drawings are all that are left of these children. Their ashes have long since sifted across the fields. Website for Anna Marie Wytko: www.annamariewytko.com Website for Joseph Wytko: www.josephwytkosaxophone.com MHK truly comes together to make Empty Bowls happen every year. Artists, business owners, high school and university students, volunteers, faith leaders, and community participants all contribute to strengthen our community and spread kindness and joy. Still plenty of time to join the fun! Look below for details or check the separate tab for more information.
An Evening of Fun and Inspiration. Dawn Downey knows how to get her audience laughing, feeling nourished and connected, and inspired to practice nonviolence, everyday. Humor really is the best vehicle for almost everything good in the world. Join us and see for yourself! Dawn Downey writes to spread kindness. By writing about her daily challenges, she sees the workings of her mind. In conversations with her fans, she learns that most minds work the same way. She shares her personal stories in the hope that readers will lovingly accept the similarities—in themselves, their loved ones, and the people who drive them crazy. Spreading kindness to the people who drive her crazy is her goal for this Season for Nonviolence. (God willin' and the creek don't rise.) She’s the author of three memoirs: Searching for My Heart, From Dawn to Daylight, and Stumbling Toward the Buddha. She lives in Kansas City MO. Connect with her at www.dawndowney.com
Every year we dedicate the days between the memorial anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi and Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr to the contemplation and practice of nonviolence in its many possibilities.
We hope you will join us. Please check back with us frequently for updates on specific events. More information about each event can be found in the 'Events' tab above. This can sometimes be a tremendous challenge. Over Spring Break, we invited you to choose one relationship in which to commit fully, for one week, to listening in a new, fresh, and genuine way. Read some of the comments below from brave people who committed whole-heartedly to one week of practicing active listening. We are impressed with their dedication and reflection. “I had no idea...I can see now that there were many times she was trying to be loving to me and I totally missed it. I didn’t see what she was trying to do.” “I didn’t realize that I was not really listening before. I was just waiting for my turn to defend or reinforce my position. When I started to really listen, I felt much less defensive.” “When I tried to think about everyone’s needs instead of judging, I discovered that I actually felt a lot more compassionate without really having to try so hard.” “Learning to truly listen, and to ask follow-up questions, may not only help me save my marriage, but will help me to get along better at work and deal with my boss as well! …. Wow!” “I never knew that ----- and I had so much in common. I thought we would never be able to see eye to eye. Now that I am learning to look for some of the things that don’t get spoken, but that are there anyway, I can see that we actually have had a lot of similar feelings and experiences. It makes me feel like I can see things with new eyes.” “Now that I am learning to listen inside myself in a new way, I feel much stronger and much more secure that I can make good, smart choices for myself. I’m not so worried about other people’s approval and that actually makes me feel less shy too!” Participate * Learn * Celebrate
