Season for Nonviolence
The Season for Nonviolence (SNV) is an annual 64 day campaign that highlights the philosophy of attaining peace through nonviolent action and encourages the practice of everyday nonviolence. The SNV is a grassroots educational initiative beginning January 30th and ending April 4th which mark the memorial anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., respectively.
Legendary leaders Mohandas K. Gandhi, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Dolores Huerta & Cesar E. Chavez, and President Nelson Mandela, as well as living legends such as His Holiness, Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet have long demonstrated these principles.
SNV was created in 1998 by the Association for Global New Thought (AGNT) and Dr. Arun Gandhi. Passionate citizen leaders for nonviolence have galvanized participation in the Season since its beginning across 900 cities in 67 countries. Manhattan, Kansas joined that group of 900 cities in 2000. Numerous local residents, young and old, have dedicated their time, energy and talents to promoting a safe and inclusive Manhattan community.
Please check back regularly, here and on our facebook page, to find the next SNV's activities.

The Manhattan Nonviolence Initiative uses the Season for Nonviolence to host and highlight some of the outstanding ideas and activities of everyday nonviolence in Manhattan. These projects guide participants through building more positive relationships, communicating around tough subjects, or having personal reflection on the meaning of everyday nonviolence in our lives. One of the simplest yet most insightful practices of this are the 64 Ways to Practice Everyday Nonviolence, which are carried out worldwide. There is one Way for each day of the Season and all 64 are posted daily on our website and our Facebook page. The 64 Ways are one of the best methods of raising consciousness to how we practice nonviolence in our lives and what everyday nonviolence means to us. We hope you'll join us during this time of understanding and growth!
64 Ways to Practice Nonviolence
Nonviolence begins by learning how to be less violent and more compassionate with ourselves. We learn by building the courage to speak and act with a respect, honor, and reverence for our own being.
In order to create a peaceful world, we must learn to practice nonviolence with one another in our day-to-day interactions.
Finally, nonviolence challenges us to stand for truth by taking action that honors the dignity and worth of every human being. This means that we practice the principles of nonviolence in our neighborhoods and communities.
For each day of the Season for Nonviolence, we suggest a different way to practice everyday nonviolence in our personal lives, our interpersonal relationships, and in our community.
